Superconducting cable development in China

- May 25, 2018-

High-temperature superconducting technology is regarded as the most potential electrician technology in the 21st century, and many countries have raised the development of the superconducting industry to a strategic height. Although the high-temperature superconducting cable has obvious advantages, it must be noted that high superconducting materials, technical costs, and long research and development cycle, and short-term returns are difficult factors that prevent many domestic cable companies from giving up on the test in the field of superconducting cables.

At present, some companies have excessively promoted the advanced nature of high-temperature superconducting cables. In fact, the superiority of superconducting materials has long been widely recognized, and over-promotion can instead lead to misleading cable companies and the cable market. Some experts called for a rational attitude to look at the future market for superconducting cables. In the long run, ordinary cross-linked polyethylene cables are mainly copper materials. The price of cables fluctuates with fluctuations in the price of copper materials. With the shortage of resources, the prices of such cables and wires will continue to rise in the future. The superconducting cable is not limited by the resource conditions. With the development of superconducting material technology, the price of superconducting cable should decline. Superconducting cables save the cost of land resources and the construction of ultra-high voltage power stations, but put forward higher requirements for the safety and reliability of power grids. Due to the internal heat loss of the superconducting cable and the existence of the refrigeration system, maintenance and operation expenses are increased, and the safety and reliability of the system are reduced.

At present, relying on existing superconducting technology, it is difficult to achieve both "fish" and "bear bear". In addition, the research and development cycle of high-temperature superconducting cables is long. From the successful cable development to the successful development of the cable system and its use in engineering, the entire cycle takes at least 5 to 10 years. This is true for every voltage grade product development.

In view of the current development status of superconducting cables, the head of the Institute of Superconducting Power Research of the Chinese Academy of Electric Power has come to Xiaokang and said that, like an electric car, although it is more expensive than a fuel car, we cannot wait, and we must gradually develop it, otherwise the technology will be difficult progress. Although it does not have the conditions for industrialization, it is a development direction. It is necessary to stimulate technology development through the expansion of demonstrations so as to promote the development of the superconducting industry into a virtuous circle.
